For many students, writing poetry is tedious and seems impossible. Tetactrys poetry has such a simple form that people can easily write a poem and feel a sense of accomplishment.
Note: A syllable is like a beat to a word. The word can has only one syllable. The word feather has two syllables. The word scampering has three syllables. Try clapping your hands to each of the words. Clap one time for each syllable.
Follow these steps to create your own Tetactrys Poem. Enjoy!
Steps To Complete A Tetactrys Poem
Choose a topic or use one provided by someone else.
Write a list of ideas about the topic or write the topic in the middle of a page and write lines around it leading to ideas.
Choose a one syllable word from your ideas to use for the first line of the poem.
Choose a two syllable word or two one syllable words to use for the second line of the poem.
Choose a three syllable word or a combination of words to come up with three syllables for the third line of the poem.
Choose a four syllable word or a combination of words to find a fourth line of the poem using four syllables.
Read over the first four lines of the poem.
Look at the words left over in the list of ideas.
Try to round out the poem with the fifth line containing ten syllables. It may summarize the first four lines or it may contain another idea not used in the first four lines having to do with the same topic.
Now that the poem is complete, read it through to decide what the title should be. This may or may not be the same as the topic. Sometimes a different pattern comes together from the bits and pieces sewn together in the poem.
Rewrite the poem as needed.
