ARE YOU DONE YET?
[FlashXer] EXERCISE: TUESDAY, FEB. 26, 2008
In a theory post, yesterday on Flash Fiction, Pam's other list, John
Irving was quoted as saying
that if you don't know where your story is going, you are then a
liar. I took some umbrage at that,
because I know that everyone has a different level and idea of how to
craft and write a tale.
Actually, I had lunch yesterday with a dear friend of mine: the
novelist and historian William Hallahan
who wrote about 9 novels and several interesting history
explorations. Bill won an Edgar, so I know
he is talented and competent. His answer surprised me. He said, he
doesn't begin the book until he
has a hell of a powerful, mind boggling ending. Once he has that he
begins the tale. But as to being a
storyteller or a liar, what the hell is the difference. We all weave
little lies in our stories, we embellish,
we slant, we do all sorts of things in simple day to day
communications. So what difference does a little
lie make. Like I told you before, sweety...this won't hurt at all....
WHAT ARE YOU LAUGHING AT? DAMNIT, WIPE THAT SMILE OFF YOUR FACE, WHAT
IN THE HELL IS
SO DAMN FUNNY?
Usual rules. 1000 words. In the subject line, please, your name the
word laughing and the story
title. Start writingnow. Tell use your tale, tell us your lies, and
if we like them, maybe
the check is in the mail....oh sure.
Have fun.

2/26/08 Janine's Laughing "Are You Done Yet?" 65 words
Jen couldn't stop laughing.
"Are you done yet?" asked Don.
"Are you sure you're not going to wet your pants or something?" Don mused.
Jen knew she shouldn't laugh. The electricity cut when Don grabbed the wet, frayed cord that was still plugged into the wall. The sight of Dan's shoulder-length hair standing up like a halo around his head was too much for Jen.

Short funny and sweet - only suggestion might be to drop the line:
"Are you sure you're not going to wet your pants or something?" Don mused.
not sure its needed for the story... Corie
