THE DIARY
After a violent thunderstorm, Harry found a rain-soaked diary among the debris in his yard. He took it into the house and laid it out to dry. He started flipping through the pages to see if he could figure out who it belonged to, but there was no name in it.
Harry started reading bits and pieces and was soon hooked. He flipped to the beginning and started in before it dried.
There were detailed descriptions of how bank robberies were done. There were dates and he started to look them up online. They matched the dates of actual bank robberies. The suspects had never been caught. He read more.
He read straight through to the end of the writing. There was writing in nearly the whole diary. He was glued to every page, buried in the details. He decided to keep the book instead of turning it into the authorities. After all, it didn't tell who the robber was and the crimes had already happened.
The next day Harry woke up from a nightmare. He was sweating and out of breath. He was being chased in his dream by the bank robber.
He paced back and forth all morning long. He was sure his dream was a warning. Then it hit him, his big idea.
Harry decided writing a story using the details of the diary would really sell. If it gave him night sweats, then imagine what it would do to other readers.
He started in at the word processor and in a couple of weeks he had a full manuscript. Then he dashed it off to the nearest publisher, sure he would be asked to travel to see someone in person. He waited and waited. After a couple of months, there was a knock at his door.
He opened it and was greeted by an investigator. He wanted to know how so many details ended up in his book when they were never released to the public. Harry was arrested, even though he explained the whole story and produced the diary.
In the trial, the diary was used to help convict harry and the real bank robber stayed to watch the whole trail, quite happy his plan had worked.
