THE SHAM OF IT ALL

"My life is a sham." I can't go on like this. People think everything is going just fine, but it's not. I have everyone fooled, but what do I do when they find out my big secret?

Should I tell a few people and see how it goes? No, that might get messy if it doesn't go well. Being a spy is very difficult. Everything I do is a lie. My very existence depends on lying. If the authorities find out, there will be hell to pay. They won't even believe me if I tell them, but it will all be over if they find out on their own.

I should stop fretting and just move forward with the plan. Sticking with the plan is very important. The high command likes plans, especially for deep undercover spies like me. They could be monitoring my progress as I am pacing back and forth in my tiny studio apartment overlooking main street USA. I can see all kinds of life down below my fifth story apartment. They can't see me looking at them. It's all the same thing. I'm being spied on as I am spying on everyone else.

The problem is I can't go on with the plan. I like these people too much. I can't go through with my plan, my directive, the only hope for my people. I am a traitor at heart. I don't have the guts for this spy life. I want to come clean with these people and have it go well. How do I do that? How is it possible I don't have an alternative plan? I learned a lot in spy school and some of it had to do with thinking on my feet. So why can't I do that right now? Why don't I try it with the neighbor and see how it goes? One person can't be all that bad.

"Hello there, Gertrude. How are you doing today?"

"Well, I am just fine, Martin. How are you?"

"I'm glad you asked. I have this one teensy little thing to tell you and I was hoping for a favorable response."

"Anything for you, Martin. You have always been such a good neighbor to me."

"I am here from the planet Berton and I am the leader in the upcoming invasion. What are your thoughts on the subject?" Martin changed into his true form as a giant cockroach.

"AAAARRRGGGGG! I'm calling the Police!"

CHOMP! Well, one neighbor down. I guess I will go back to my sham of a life.
