THE SUBSTITUTE
It was sitting on the table. Maria didn't want to touch it. The letter seemed like it was made of poison with the words emblazoned on it. It was a list of instructions for how to kill someone with a list of who was to be killed. The letter was addressed to her old boyfriend who just moved out.
The part that bothered Maria the most was that her name was on the list. She was marked for death, but she had the letter. She stopped her own death by throwing out the would-be killer.
She gathered up her courage and took the letter to the fireplace. She lit it on fire and watched until it was done. She didn't need it anymore, she had memorized it. Her new plan was perfect. All she had to do was continue on as if she were her boyfriend.
The directions were surprisingly simple. The poisoning was quick and left no trace. All she had to do was show up in a uniform and add the poison to the water supply at each of the houses. Then the money would arrive. Her life as a substitute had begun.
