This is the MyWiki user manual.
Videos explaining some of MyWiki's functionality are available at
www.mywikiapp.com/videos/.To view close-ups of the thumbnail images simply tap on them. A full-size version will appear in the image viewer.
Creating an article
An article can be created in multiple ways. First of all, you can create an article by creating a link inside a paragraph and simply tapping it. The second way is to open search and entering the desired article title in the search field.
If the article does not already exist, the 'Create article' option will appear as the top most search result.
Note: To tag an article as 'favorite' press the star icon on the top right. Quickly find all favorite articles by pressing the star button in search.
Creating and editing paragraphs
An article consists of multiple paragraphs. New paragraphs can be added to an article by tapping the 'Add a paragraph here' button which is always placed placed below all other paragraphs.
You can also add a paragraph above an existing paragraph by engaging the edit mode and pressing 'Add a paragraph here'.
The 'edit mode' is activated by pressing the 'Edit' button in the top right corner. When engaged the button will glow orange and the paragraph edit functionality will become available. Go ahead and try it now.
Links
When editing a paragraph you can create links by selecting the desired text and pressing the link icon. The text will then be enclosed in brackets. For example:
[[example link
]] is a link.
It is also possible to create links with an alternative title. For example:
[[welcome to mywiki
]here
] will create a link that points to
here Links to empty articles are marked gray. For example:
empty article does not contain any paragraphs. Links that are marked blue are links to articles that have paragraphs. For example: the
Public Transit Adventures in LA County article. Orange links point to email adresses or external websites such as wikipedia.com. These links are created automatically by MyWiki.
Note: links to external websites will close MyWiki and open in the Safari browser. Press and hold an email link to send a mail using the iPhone's mail application.
Formatting content
Applying formatting to text works in mostly the the same way as creating links. You can add
bold or
italic formatting to selected text. Bulleted items can be created by selecting multiple lines of text and pressing the
bullet formatting button. For example:
this is the first line
this is the second line
this is the third line
After selecting these three lines and pressing the bullet button the formatting will be applied:
this is the first line
this is the second line
this is the third line
Removing formatting and links
To remove formatting or links from a text, select it, and press the corresponding formatting icon. For example: select a link (including the surrounding double brackets) and press the link icon from the formatting toolbar.
If you want to remove all formatting types from a text, select the whole text and press the brush button. The brush button will clear any formatting from a selected text.
Images
Add images by pressing the camera icon in the formatting toolbar.
Add an existing image from the library or capture a new one with the built-in camera.
When you tap on an image in a paragraph the full scale image will appear in the image viewer. You can close the image viewer by tapping on it and pressing the close button.
Settings
The settings screen provides the following functionality:
Reorder or delete paragraphs
Show or hide the table of contents
Change the article title
Setting the article as a homepage
There can be only one homepage. If no article is set as homepage, the home button will be disabled.
In the reordering section, paragraphs that have no title are indicated with "…"
Note: Changing the title of a given article will invalidate all links pointing to it. They will need to be manually adjusted. Also, you cannot rename the title of an article to a title that has already been taken.
Exporting
Your wiki can be exported as a mini html site. Use the export functionality to create this site, archive it as a zip file and sending it attached to an email. You can then access your data using your web browser. As these exports tend to be quite large in size, the option 'include images' is provided. Not including images can drastically reduce the file size of the export.
Browser compatibility
The generated mini-site is best viewed in a CSS3 compatible browser like recent versions of Firefox, Safari or Chrome. Internet Explorer does work though it is not supported. When using IE be sure to allow 'scripting and activex content'.
